Ambassador Bassett was appointed Ambassador to Canada, Jamaica and Bahamas in August 2010. Previously he was appointed as Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Foreign Affairs with responsibility for Consular and Passport Division in August 2005. The Consular Division is responsible for the operation of the Irish Passport system, both within the State and outside; providing consular assistance to the growing number of Irish citizens who travel abroad. The Division also incorporates the Irish Abroad Unit, which coordinates Government relations with the Irish Diaspora overseas and oversees the Emigrant Support Programme to Irish community organizations abroad.
